42A HR Specialist: Civilian Human Resources Careers

UPDATED 2026-07-20 · 6 MIN READ

42A is one of the cleanest office-career translations in the Army, but most 42As undersell it. You ran personnel actions, records, pay inquiries, evaluations, and awards for hundreds of soldiers under deadlines that had teeth. Civilian HR does the same work with different software and better coffee. Here is how to walk in as an experienced hire.

IPPS-A is your hidden asset: it is a real enterprise HRIS. Say 'daily user of an enterprise HRIS supporting 500+ personnel records' and every HR hiring manager understands you immediately.

Career ladder and certifications

  1. HR coordinator / HR assistant (land here first)

Typical pay $40K to $55K. With your volume of personnel-action experience you will outperform this role quickly; treat it as a 12-to-18-month on-ramp to generalist.

  2. Get certified early: aPHR or SHRM-CP

The aPHR has no experience prerequisite and Army COOL can fund it before you separate. SHRM-CP carries more weight once you have civilian time. Either one moves your resume past the filters.

  3. HR generalist

The core job: $55K to $75K typical. Employee relations, onboarding, benefits, compliance. Your military background reads especially well at defense contractors and large logistics employers.

  4. Specialist tracks and management

Recruiters (especially veteran-hiring programs), payroll and benefits analysts, and HRIS analysts run $60K to $85K. HR managers commonly reach $80K to $110K. Government civilian HR (GS-0201) adds veterans' preference and a pension.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 42A get an HR job without a degree?

Yes, especially coordinator and assistant roles, and defense contractors weight military HR experience heavily. A certification (aPHR now, SHRM-CP later) plus your transaction volume usually outcompetes a fresh HR graduate.

Which HR certification should a 42A get first?

aPHR before separation: no experience prerequisite and often COOL-fundable. Add SHRM-CP after a year or two of civilian HR work; it is the one hiring managers ask about.

What does military HR experience pay in the civilian world?

Coordinators start $40K to $55K, generalists $55K to $75K, managers $80K+. Federal civilian HR (GS-0201) is a strong lane: veterans' preference applies and your Army systems knowledge transfers.
