31B Military Police: Civilian Law Enforcement and Security Careers
31B is one of the most direct MOS-to-career pipelines in the Army, and departments know it. You leave with patrol experience, use-of-force training, report writing reps, and a background investigators love. The decisions that matter are which lane (municipal, federal, corrections, corporate) and how to avoid starting over when some of your training already counts.
Your four lanes, honestly compared
Municipal and state police
The classic move. Some states grant partial POST credit for MP training and many departments give veteran preference points. Starting pay typically $45K to $70K, higher in major metros, with overtime and pension on top. Your MP record effectively pre-clears the background check that washes out many applicants.
Federal law enforcement
CBP, Border Patrol, Federal Protective Service, and TSA hire veterans in volume, and veterans' preference genuinely moves your file. GS-based pay with locality adjustments often beats municipal starts, and federal retirement is hard to top. Longer hiring timelines, so apply 6+ months out.
Corrections
The fastest hire of the four, often weeks. State and federal corrections officers typically earn $40K to $60K with strong benefits and a pension. Many 31Bs use corrections as a paid bridge while a police or federal application processes.
Corporate and physical security management
The lane most MPs overlook. Access control, incident response, and security operations centers need supervisors who write clean reports and enforce procedure. Security supervisors run $50K to $70K; a PSP or CPP certification later pushes management roles past $90K.
Resume bullets: before & after
Fast-track moves while you're still in
- Request your training records early. POST credit evaluations need documented hours, and your academy transcript is easier to pull while you are in.
- Keep your driving and disciplinary record spotless. It is the first thing every department checks.
- Start federal applications 6 to 9 months out. USAJOBS timelines are long and veterans' preference only helps a file that exists.
- Consider a criminal justice associate's with tuition assistance now. It bumps both federal grades and promotion boards later.
Frequently asked questions
Does MP experience count toward the police academy?
In several states, partially. POST boards may waive portions of the academy or grant test-out options for documented military police training. Every state differs, so check your target state's POST site directly.
Can a 31B go straight into federal law enforcement?
Yes. CBP and Border Patrol in particular hire 31Bs directly, and veterans' preference plus an MP background is a strong federal file. Expect a long pipeline: application, testing, medical, poly, and background often total 6+ months.
What does corporate security pay compared to policing?
Entry security supervision starts lower than sworn police work, but management tracks (with a PSP or CPP cert) commonly pass $90K without shift work or the physical risk. Many MPs do a decade sworn, then move corporate.
